Eating Well with AI

Good nutrition is one of the best gifts you can give your body. But planning healthy meals can feel overwhelming — especially when you're cooking for just one or two people, or when you have dietary needs to consider.

Here's the good news: AI can help. In just a few minutes, you can get meal ideas tailored to what you like, what your body needs, and what you have on hand. No complicated recipes. No guessing whether something is actually healthy.

Why meal planning matters

Planning meals ahead of time does two important things. First, it makes cooking easier because you already know what to make — no standing in front of the fridge wondering what's for dinner. Second, it helps you eat better because you're more likely to choose something nourishing when you've thought about it in advance.

And here's the thing: you don't need to be perfect. Even small improvements — like adding one extra vegetable, or choosing whole grain bread instead of white — make a real difference over time.

Using AI to find recipes

Let's say you have salmon, broccoli, and rice in your kitchen, but you're not sure how to make something interesting. Here's how you'd ask an AI:

Step 1: Open an AI chatbot (like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini). Step 2: Type something like: "I have salmon, broccoli, and brown rice. Can you suggest an easy, healthy dinner?" Step 3: Press Enter. Step 4: The AI will give you a simple recipe — usually in just a few sentences. You can ask follow-up questions like "Can you make it spicy?" or "Is this good for heart health?"

Tip

You don't need to list fancy ingredients. "I have chicken and whatever's in my pantry" works great. The AI will suggest practical meals using everyday foods.

Understanding food labels with AI

Food labels can be confusing. All those numbers — sodium, fiber, protein, sugar — can make your head spin. AI can help you understand what they mean and whether a food is a good choice for you.

For example, you might ask: "Is 450mg of sodium per serving considered high?" or "What does it mean if a yogurt has 12 grams of sugar?" The AI will explain in plain language, without the jargon.

Creating a meal plan for the week

One of the best ways to eat well is to plan your meals for the whole week. This might sound like a lot of work, but AI makes it simple.

Try asking: "Can you suggest five easy dinners for the week that are heart-healthy and use simple ingredients?" or "I like chicken, pasta, and vegetables. Give me a week of dinner ideas that take less than 30 minutes to make." The AI will give you a whole week in one go.

Tip

When you ask AI for meal plans, mention any foods you dislike or can't eat due to allergies or dietary choices. The more you tell it, the better suggestions it can make.

Cooking for one or two

Recipes are often written for a family of four or more, which means lots of leftovers. But eating the same thing every day gets old, and some foods don't keep well.

Ask your AI: "I'm cooking just for myself. How do I scale down recipes so I don't have too many leftovers?" You'll get tips like freezing portions, adjusting cooking times, and making recipes that actually taste good when reheated.

Try it yourself

Now it's your turn. Use an AI chatbot to plan some meals.

Try It Yourself

Ask an AI for seven days of heart-healthy dinner ideas using simple ingredients and recipes that take 30 minutes or less. Write down one recipe that sounds good to you and try making it this week.

What to keep in mind

AI is great at suggesting recipes and explaining nutrition, but remember: every body is different. If you have specific health conditions — like diabetes, high blood pressure, or food allergies — talk with your doctor or a dietitian before making big changes to your diet.

Also, AI sometimes suggests recipes that look harder than they actually are. Feel free to ask for simpler versions, or look them up online to watch a video if you want to see someone make it first.

The goal isn't perfect eating. It's building habits that help you feel good, have energy, and enjoy your meals. Even small wins count.

What you've learned

In this module, you learned how to ask AI for recipe suggestions, how to use AI to understand food labels, how to create a week's worth of meal ideas, and how to handle cooking for smaller portions. You're now ready to use AI as your personal nutrition helper.

In the next module, we'll show you how to use AI to suggest gentle exercises that keep your body strong and flexible — and how to build a routine that feels good.
